Continuing Professional Development

 The Chronic Condition Self-management (CCSM) resource is provided for RANZCP Fellows and Affiliates as part of the Continuing Professional Development program. This resource, along with others offered by the College, aims to facilitate and support activities that promote engagement, reflection on current practice and the ongoing development of skills and knowledge.

CPD program guide

The 2010 program guide provides a comprehensive explanation of CPD requirements. In brief however, practitioners must gain

At least 55 credits annually (with a minimum of 50 hours for practitioners within New Zealand) including: at least 15 credits (10 hours) of peer-reviewed activity, at least 20 credits of self-guided learning and for practitioners within New Zealand, a minimum of one audit.
At least 165 credits of CPD activity over a period of three years of engagement in practice.

CPD program activities

The program activities are summarised in the table below.

Section 1. Planning for CPD - The Professional Development Plan (PDP)

  • Development of a PDP at the commencement of the three year CPD time frame
  • Annual review of PDP and modification of the PDP for the following year
  • Final review and redevelopment of PDP at the end of three years

Annual Completion Requirement:  5 credits annually for a documented plan and annual review

Section 2. Formal peer review activities

Demonstrated Practice Improvement (DPI)

Demonstrated model of practice change as a result of new learning in any category

Additional 2 credits per DPI as documented and verified

2.1        Peer review groups

  • Participation (attendance and presentation) in a RANZCP registered peer review group
  • Interprofessional participation in another College’s accredited peer review group

2.2        Practice visits

  • Participation as a private practice or public sector host or visitor
  • Accreditation Surveyor

2.3        Supervision

  • Receiving individual or group supervision
  • Providing supervision to peers
  • Providing formal second opinions

Minimum requirement of 15 credits annually for at least 10 hours of activity (Credits may be achieved as a combination of any of the Section 2 activities and measured alternatively as 1.5 credits per hour of activity.)

Section 3. Practice improvement activities

3.1        Practice development and review

  • 360 degree feedback - patient, professional and stakeholder survey
  • Formal clinical audit*
  • Interactive workshops

3.2        Continuous quality improvement

  • Practice audits, root cause analysis, structured quality improvement & risk management projects
  • Giving expert testimony
  • Tribunal or Mental Health Review Board work or training

3.3        Research (major projects may attract more credits)

  • Publication of manuscript or activity as reviewer
  • Implementation of research projects, trials
  • Demonstrated transference of research findings into practice

Completion of Section 3 activities is optional: 10 credits per completed activity or 1.5 credits per hour

*An annual clinical audit is a requirement for NZ practitioners

Section 4. Self-guided learning

4.1        Accredited group learning activities

  • Non interactive workshops
  • Conferences
  • Seminars

4.2        Structured learning activities

  • Accredited short education & training courses (internal or external providers)
  • Formal education such as Diploma, Masters and PhD courses
  • Structured learning projects

4.3        Teaching

  • Development, presentation and review of sessions or programs as presenter
  • Development of examination questions, examining in College exams

4.4        Informal learning activities

  • Reading journals and texts
  • Audiotapes/podcasts
  • Completion of non accredited internet CME programs

4.5        Team based learning activities

  • Professional activities such as grand rounds, journal clubs, group informal case study reviews

4.6        Accredited Online Modules

  • Completion of accredited CPD online modules as made available by the College (Credits as advised)

Minimum requirement: 20 credits per year

Generally hours based: 1 hour of activity is awarded 1 credit

Credits

By completing the chronic condition self-management modules, participants can accrue continuing professional development (CPD) credits. For this resource, participants may claim two credits for completing each module. Additional credits may be claimed where it can be shown that further relevant activity has been completed.

Audit

Participants in the College CPD program are required to keep records of all approved CPD activity undertaken and to file a CPD Claim Form on an annual basis. Users who log on to the CCSM website and record their comments in the textboxes provided can print their comments/send their responses to an email account to keep a record of module(s) that have been completed. This information may be required in the case of an audit; 10% of CPD claims are audited each year and evidence is required to support the selected claims.
