6.2: Behaviour Change

self_managementBehaviour change

Behaviour change was identified in module 2 as one of the core skills required to offer optimal self-management support and an overview of models of health behaviour change were provided (Module 2.5). Module 6 will offer an opportunity to apply the stages of change model.

There are a number of steps involved in making changes.

  1. Problem recognition – what is the issue?
  2. Perceived impact on life – what effect is it having?
  3. Beliefs about capacity to change – am I able to change? How do I bring about change?
  4. Intention to change – what am I thinking of doing/changing?

self_managementThe stages of change model

The stages of change model will be used in this module to guide your self-assessment of health and well-being and for reflection on your progress. The six stages are outlined below.

Stage 1: Thinking of changing (pre-contemplation)

What would I like to discuss? How do I feel when...? What are the pros and cons?

Stage 2: Preparing for change (contemplation)

How confident am I? What has worked in the past?

Stage 3: Making changes (preparation)

How can I plan for this? What are the likely barriers?

Stage 4: Maintaining changes (action)

How is it going? How have things improved?

Stage 5: Dealing with relapse (maintenance)

What has happened? How to get back on track?

Stage 6: Leaving it behind (termination)

What have I learnt? How can I move on?
